Saliva / oral fluid-based drug tests can generally detect use during the previous few days. Saliva or oral fluid based drug tests are becoming more prevalent because of their convenience and the fact that they can not be adulterated. Furthermore, on-site oral based tests in particular enable the implementation of random testing programs, proven to be the most effective type of drug screening. Oral fluid based tests are as accurate as urine and can be obtained from quality suppliers in the United States.

Testing is usually performed by employers, for either pre-employment, random, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, or return-to-duty testing. Oral fluid based testing most closely mimics results found with blood and is preferable for detecting on-the-job drug use or in post-accident applications in this case because the degree of intoxication can be approximated based on the amount of substance

Detection in saliva tests begins immediately upon use:

  • Marijuana and Hashish (THC): From time of ingestion, up to 24 hours.
  • Cocaine (including crack): From time of ingestion up to 2 to 3 days.
  • Opiates: From time of ingestion up to 2 to 3 days
  • Methamphetamine and MDMA|Ecstasy (MDMA, "Crank," "Ice"): From time of ingestion up to 2 to 3 days.
  • Benzodiazepines: From time of ingestion up to 2 to 3 days.

[edit] Saliva Drug Test Characteristics

   * Are a little more expensive than urine testing, but less than hair or blood. (~$15-$75).
   * Are considered a relatively unintrusive method of drug testing.
   * Are becoming more common.
   * Are easy to administer but require lab processing to ensure accuracy.
   * Detect use primarily within the past few days.
   * Can detect more recent use than other testing methods.
   * Have no nationally accepted standards or cutoff concentrations for detection, making results greatly dependent on the
specific product purchased. This could also make results less-reliable and/or acceptable for legal cases. * More reliable for detection of Methamphetamine and Opiates, less reliable for THC or Cannabinoids (2004).

[edit] Popularity of Saliva Drug Testing

Recently there has been extensive research on the use of saliva in drug testing. A person’s saliva has certain advantages and certain disadvantages when comparing the use of urine in testing for the presence of drugs. The most obvious advantage is simply that the collection procedure is easier and less prone to possible efforts to beat the drug test by substituting a clean drug test sample as is sometimes the case in urine drug testing. The ease at which a person’s saliva can be tested make saliva drug tests less invasive than other forms of drug testing. The collection of saliva for saliva drug tests is easier and safer when compared to urine or blood.

It simply involves using a swab that looks very similar to a common toothbrush but in place of bristles a pad that servers, to collect the saliva in the mouththe pad is then placed between the lower cheek and gum for about two minutes. Once saturated with saliva the pad is then transfered to a collection vial. Many of the most commonly abused drugs can be detected in saliva including marijuana, thc, heroin, cocaine and amphetamines.

Saliva drug testing is rapidly becoming an alternative to urine and blood drug testing for the Federal Government.

[edit] Limitations of Saliva Drug Testing

However there are disadvantages and those mostly relate to the short drug detection time limitation of saliva drug tests. Simply put saliva cannot be used to detect historical drug use. Most drugs do not linger in saliva and disappear in anywhere from twelve to twenty four hours. Because of this saliva testing is being considered for drug detection in situations where recent drug use must be detected including vehicle and equipment drivers, those involved in workplace or other accidents and not as a use to detect past drug use.

[edit] Passing a Saliva Drug Test

There are products in the marketplace specifically designed to pass a saliva drug test. These are commonly referred to as 'saliva solutions'. When selecting such a product make sure you choose a reputable company. Some things to look for are:

  1. Do they offer a money back guarantee?
  2. Do they answer their phone or emails?
  3. Is the website fully functional?
  4. If store bought is the clerk familiar with the product?

A word of caution : Do not use so-called 'masking agents'. This is a sure-fire recipe for disaster as modern drug tests can detect them.

Most of the saliva solutions on the market do work. However, make sure you can get in touch with someone should you need support.
