Urine Drug Test / Urine Drug Screen / Urinalysis
Drug tests have become very common in both the workplace and schools within the last twenty years or so. Generally, urine drug testing is the most common form of drug screening. Most employers rely on urine analysis for detecting drugs among employees or prospective employees. The oldest, most controversial and most commonly used method of drug testing is the urine drug test. Results of a urine test show the presence or absence of specific drugs or drug metabolites in the urine. Metabolites are drug residues that remain in the system for some time after the effects of the drug have worn off. A positive urine test does not necessarily mean the subject was under the influence of drugs at the time of the test. Rather, it detects and measures use of a particular drug within the previous few days. Although urine drug testing is the most common method for a pre employment drug test, many creative scientists have developed tools to beat these tests. A vast array of products are easily obtainable online and in specialty shops.
Employers in many states have the legal authority to request a random drug test, whether they have a reasonable suspicion or not. Many companies have implemented a policy of completely random drug testing. If your name is selected then it is your turn for random drug testing; the employee may have little or no advance warning in these cases. Despite arguments against random drug testing, employers often stand firm on their decision to implement this policy.
Urine drug screening can be used to evaluate possible accidental or intentional overdose or poisoning, to assess the type and amount of prescribed and/or illicit drugs used by a person, or to determine the cause of acute drug toxicity. It is also used to monitor drug dependency or to determine the presence of drugs in the body for medical and legal purposes.
In many occupations, urine drug screening has become a required condition of employment. Nearly all workers in certain occupations, such as law enforcement and transportation, must submit to periodic, random, and post incident drug testing. Federal laws mandate the administration of drug screens to workers in the transportation industry, including bus drivers, truckers, airline employees, and railroad workers. Federally required testing must be conducted by a laboratory certified by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. Other industries must follow state regulations, which vary considerably.
Urine screening tests are able to detect general classes of compounds, such as amphetamines, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, and opiates. Urine drug screening can also detect cocaine, marijuana, and phencyclidine (PCP). The screening tests themselves are unable to distinguish between illicit and prescription drugs within the same class. A patient taking prescribed codeine pills and an individual using heroin would both show positive urine screening tests for opiates. It is also possible for some over-the-counter medications to cause a positive drug screen in someone who has taken neither illegal nor prescription drugs. These incorrect reactions are known as "false-positives."
Urine drug screens can detect the use of several drugs. Some of these drugs are as follows:
* cocaine * amphetamines * heroin * morphine * phencyclidine (PCP) * benzodiazepines * alcohol * hydromorphone * tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) * propoxyphene * methadone * codeine * barbituates
Urine Drug Test Definition
Urine drug screening, or toxicological screening, is a process of chemical analysis designed to test patients for drug abuse, or to insure that a patient is substance-free before undergoing a medical procedure.
Urine Drug Test Characteristics
* Are the least expensive of the test methods (~$7-$50 for home version). * Are considered an intrusive method of testing. * Can be done at home (for example by parents) though require lab verification for accurate results. * Detect use primarily within the past week (longer with regular use). * Can be affected by abstaining from use for a period of time before the test. * Are often temperature tested to insure sample integrity.
Urine Drug Test Methodology
| Also known as urinalysis, this procedure requires that one provide a sample of urine. Either a test card is used on site for immediate results or the sample is sent away to a lab to undergo gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (also known as GCMS), high performance liquid chromatography or immunoassay analysis. The majority of tests administered in pre-hire and even most probate scenarios are of the immediate, and less accurate "at home" variety. Most "dip stick" type tests have higher thresholds for a postive than do the GCMS tests. If a positive result (drug presence indicated) is found, the sample is usually sent to a lab for GCMS confirmation. This is largely due to the costliness of GCMS labaratory testing and time it takes to process and receive results. |
Passing a Urine Drug Test
There are products in the marketplace specifically designed to pass a urine drug test. These are commonly referred to as 'flushing agents'. When selecting such a product make sure you choose a reputable company. Some things to look for are:
- Do they offer a money back guarantee?
- Do they answer their phone or emails?
- Is the website fully functional?
- If store bought is the clerk familiar with the product?
A word of caution : Do not use so-called 'masking agents'. This is a sure-fire recipe for disaster as modern drug tests can detect them.
Most of the flushing agents on the market do work. However, make sure you can get in touch with someone should you need support.
Urine additives to pass a urine drug test
You must be very careful when using a urine additive to pass your urine drug test:
- Urine additives can be detected.
- If you are caught with the urine additive in the drug test environment expect the worst possible outcome.
Urine masking agents to pass a urine drug test
This is an old school approach to passing a urine drug test. Basically some type of adulterant (bleach, etc) is added to the urine sample. This type of method to pass your urine drug test will most certainly be detected by modern lab drug testing procedures.
Flushing agents to pass a urine drug test
By far the best method to pass a urine drug test. These typically work by flushing toxins from your urinary tract so that your urine sample is clean when given to the testing authority. Advantages are as follows:
- Typically works within one hour.
- Undetectable.
- You bring nothing into the test environment.
Naturally Passing a Urine Drug Test
Please keep in mind that none of the below steps can guarantee that you will pass your drug test. They can however be an excellent aid.
Your best bet to pass your drug test is to try a reputable detox product to pass a drug test.
Know Detection Periods
You may not even need to take steps to pass a drug test. If you are in doubt stop by your local pharmacy and pick up a drug test and test yourself. Many parents test their teens so picking up some type of store bought drug test should not raise any eyebrows.
Avoid Using Any Drugs
Avoid being around others consuming drugs at least 48 hours before your deadline, a week if possible. In general, the longer the better. Your first line of defense is always abstinence. The exception to this if that if you have a prescription to use certain drugs, continue the use of those.
Water Consumption
For at least (2) days prior to the day of your deadline consume a minimum of (6) 16 ounce glasses of water per day. Water is a catalyst to the body's natural detoxification process. Drinking water will help to flush drug metabolites out of your body, especially when combined with healthy eating and exercise habits. Just keep some water by you and sip on it all day long. You can drink several glasses this way without having to drink the water all at once.
Exercise
Exercise the week leading up to your deadline. Aerobic exercise raises your metabolism which assists greatly in the detoxification process. Exercise every day up to 48 hours before your drug test. To burn the metabolite-containing fat cells, exercise regularly every day (twice a day for 30 to 60 minutes if possible). Be active. Climb the stairs at work. Walk the dogs for an extra hour. Stand at your desk. Walk to the corner store instead of driving. Do whatever it takes to burn the fat and boost your metabolism - but do NOT diet. On the other hand don't gorge. (We're trying to burn fat, remember). It's much better to eat often than to overeat at any one sitting. Anyone who has ever stuffed themselves knows that they certainly don't feel a big boost of energy afterwards. Eat things that give you energy, but avoid excesses of quick metabolism boosters such as coffee, sugar and Red Bull. Especially when taken in large quantities, these will be consumed by the body quickly and lead your metabolism to 'crash' as soon as the sugar and caffeine runs out. You want to keep your body metabolism at a steady, hearty pace all day long.
Diet
- Incorporate a healthy diet the week prior to your personal deadline. High fat foods, greasy foods (particularly butters, cream sauces, and fried foods) and junk foods have been shown to slow the detoxification process. Eat fiber, carbohydrates, vegetables and foods high in protein as normal. Do NOT skip breakfast. Eat often throughout the day, but avoid eating late at night when your body has nothing to do with those extra calories other than store them as fat. Do NOT go on a crash diet to burn fat. When you diet your body panics because it thinks you're starving. Your metabolism will drop and your body will hold on to those fat cells even tighter than before.
- Consume only light meals the day of your personal deadline.
- Avoid alcoholic beverages, over the counter drugs and unnecessary medications.
Creatine Levels
Maintaining Creatine Levels is a Key. THIS IS REAL IMPORTANT STUFF: Creatine is a natural protein created by the body and is usually excreted in the urine at fairly constant concentrations. When the urine is diluted by frequent urination and extra hydration, the creatine level in the urine will drop. Creatine levels are tested for in labs and a low creatine level may indicate to the lab that you have attempted to flush your system of drugs.
Below are some guidelines for naturally flushing toxins from your system. While these guidelines are sound advice it is best to use some type of commercially available flushing agent to accelerate this process and guarantee you pass your urine drug test.
WASH YOURSELF OUT: The general strategy for passing urine tests is to increase your fluid intake and urine flow so as to dilute the concentration of drugs in the sample below the threshold of detection. An hour or two before the test, you should fill your bladder with fluids - as much as you can drink. Water is fine - contrary to popular rumor, there is NO evidence that goldenseal, vinegar, niacin, or vitamin C help. However, high-dosage aspirin may reduce the sensitivity of the EMIT urine test for pot (only). Many people wash themselves out for several days in advance by drinking a lot and exercising, but there is no reason to think this is useful. In no case should you give your first urine of the morning, since drug metabolites tend to build up during your sleep.
While you're loading up on water before the test, you may also want to take a large dose (50-100 milligrams) of vitamin B-2, available in B-complex multivitamins. The purpose of this is to color your urine yellow, since otherwise you are likely to produce clear, watery urine, which makes some collectors suspicious (contrary to rumor, vitamin C won't help). In rare instances, some labs will reject a sample for being too watery; in this case, however, they will typically give you a second chance. Wait until your test results have been confirmed before indulging in compromising behavior.
You can boost your fluid output by taking diuretics, which stimulate urination. Weak diuretics include coffee, cranberry juice, certain health food products and over-the-counter pills for pre-menstrual water retention.
If you're taking the test on very short notice, you may wish to resort to more potent diuretics, which are widely prescribed to treat high blood pressure. Although strong diuretics, such as furosemide (Lasix®), are available only on prescription in the U.S., they can be had over-the-counter in Mexico and other foreign countries. Beware that they can be dangerous for certain persons, such as diabetics or pregnant women, and can cause problems if taken over extended periods. Diuretics can be detected in urine, but are rarely checked except for athletes. The following regime has been suggested by a former army drug testing officer (Robert Freeman, "How to 'Beat' a Drug Test," High Times, Aug. 1988): Take an 80-milligram dose of Lasix; take a hefty drink of water; piss two or three times, then take the test. If you're lucky and didn't smoke too much pot, a good washout may get you past a test on a couple days' notice. However, regular smokers should allow at least a week or two if at all possible. While the above steps can assist you in passing a urine drug test it is best to use some type of commercially available flushing agent to accelerate this process and guarantee you pass your urine drug test.
False positives
No laboratory process is completely free from error. The GC/MS test is virtually error free, but the EMIT is far from accurate. There are some false positives you should avoid if you’re getting an EMIT test. Take this seriously; false positives run high. If you know that there will be a GC/MS confirmation test, you can disregard this section. It would be too lengthy to list all of the false positives here. Jeff Nightbyrd’s “Conquering the Urine Tests” pamphlet lists a majority of the false positives in detail. (If you are clean, want to get back at the testing industry for conducting these absurd tests, and know that there will be a confirmation test, you could consume several false positives. This would force labs to pay for the high priced GC/MS test, eventually drive up test expenses. You will still pass the test as long as you didn’t use any true positives.)
Certain foods, such as poppy seeds, may result in a positive urine screen for opiates, since poppy seeds are derived from opium poppies. Preliminary urine screening results, when positive, should be confirmed by a more accurate method that can distinguish between poppy seed ingestion and use of heroin or other opiates. Poppy seeds and opiates produce different chemicals, known as metabolic breakdown products or metabolites, as they travel through the body, allowing them to be distinguished from one another.
Ibuprofen
Ibuprofen is a common pain reliever that (even in low dosages) used to cause a false THC positive on the EMIT test. The EMIT has been changed to use a different enzyme to eliminate false positives due to Ibuprofen. Ibuprofen in very high doses will still interfere with both the EMIT and the GC/MS. There is some conflicting data here because some sources say that the GC/MS tests can distinguish between Ibuprofen and THC (as well as other over-the-counter drugs).
Cold remedies, pain relievers, hay fever remedies, & diet pills
Decongestants and diet pills result in false positives for amphetamine use in one third of the test samples given to 40 of the countries leading laboratories. There are roughly 300 over-the-counter drugs that cause false positives on the EMIT.
Antibiotics
Certain antibiotics (like Amoxicillin) are claimed to cause a positive for heroin or cocaine. My expert source was unable to verify this, so I regret that there is some uncertainty here.
Melanin (black skin)
Melanin is the brown pigment that protects your skin from UV rays. It was raised as a discrimination issue in the 1980’s, and argued that melanin’s molecular structure is similar to that of a THC metabolite. Subsequent research revealed flaws in the data. Melanin was found to have no effect on THC metabolite testing.
DHEA
DHEA taken by AIDS patients will cause a false positive for anabolic steroid use.
Dental Treatment
Caine products (like novacaine) used in dentistry have been known to cause false positives for cocaine.
True positives (legitimate)
Some legal products actually contain small amounts of illegal chemicals. All tests, including the GC/MS, will test you positive because the metabolites derived from the true positive are identical to the metabolites of the illegal drugs. One exception: poppy seeds will not cause a positive GC/MS (explained below).
Poppy seeds
Poppy seeds, usually on breads, contain traces of morphine, and lead to positives for opiates. According to Dr. Grow, eating a pastry filled with poppy seeds will bring results showing that you are a *high level* opiate user. Harold Crossley, a nationally known chemical dependency expert, said you would have to eat 100 poppy seed bagels to score a positive on a drug test. When taken into account that very few poppy seeds are sprinkled on bagels, you can see that poppy seeds from a hundred poppy seed bagels will easily fill a single large pastry. Purim cookies, a Jewish food known as Hamantashen, may have five to six tablespoons of poppy seeds. A couple Purim cookies may cause a positive test. Poppy seeds can be distinguished from illicit drugs on the GC/MS test. Although poppy seeds have the same metabolites as opium, these metabolites are shown to have different patterns when viewed with the GC/MS.
Testosterone supplements
Orchic extract (found in bull’s balls) will give a positive for anabolic steroid use. It is a legitimate substance that causes the test to imply that you abuse steroids.
